Welcome to my blog!

Dear friends and family,

I'm starting this blog as a way for you to keep up with me as I travel to the D. R. Congo.  I'll be leaving on the 21st of May and coming home on the 14th of August.  I will be staying at the Jamaa Letu orphanage in Lubumbashi where I will be helping out with chores and also teaching some English.  The director of the orphanage and the local pastor will be receiving me at the airport.  As a little background, the D. R. Congo, formerly Zaire, was a Belgian colony, and French is widely used.  I will be in the southeast corner of the country and a dialect of Swahili is also used there.  Feel free to leave comments!  Thanks for your prayers and support.

P.S. I'm not sure if I have a mailing address, but I will post it if I do!

2 - What is a blog? Where is your picture? Is this in lieu of telephone contact? Does everyone have access to all comments? Are you back yet?

3 - I'm in the loop and will be watching for updates. My love and prayers go with you. I'll be eager to read the blow-by-blow. By the way, the Shreveport airport is the ONLY airport in the world where I've had my tooth paste ring the alarm bell. They made me cram it into my 12 ounce plastic container before they'd let me through security ... but then I look so threatening! Thanks for riding to the airport with me so your Dad could help to check in. I do it all the time myself, but like you wanting to be taken care of when you get home, it's nice to be pampered when I can!

5 - Claire--- ahhhhh!! i'm so proud of you. Have a great time and promise to share your wise world perspective with me when you come back. I remember reading a book in mrs. tania's class about parting advice, that suggested challenging people instead of weakening them: saying "Be dangerous" instead of "Be safe/careful." Well, your parents wouldn't like that very much, so maybe don't be dangerous, but instead ... be bold! (Comment this)

8 - I hope you feel better. Rev. Gorman, Carl's friend from New Orleans stopped by today. He has a ton of contacts in Africa, including a physician who specializes in tropical medicine. He will be in touch with you in the next few weeks. He also introduced me to Nate, a Missionary who has current contacts in Africa. He was very reassuring and said that we need a Skpe account. The only drawback is that you need access to a computer. The pictures look very nice. I am looking formard to more. More communication too, if possible. I hope you feel better. 9 - Claire, I love reading your comments - sorta like a diary. I've never done "blog" before. We talked about you in Sunday School this morning - everyone has you on their prayer list. Paris (our new dog) had her first training this afternoon - she's a quick learn, and is such a pretty puppy. Let us know if there are things that we can send you - personal - or for the girls at the orphanage. Love you, dear, Mammaw June (Comment this)

10 - Claire, I've been able to find out a lot about the orphanage by pulling it up on Internet. I hope that all is going well for you - I think about you each day, and know that this is a dramatic experience for you. I say a little prayer, too. Love you, Mammaw June (Comment this)
